"Carecrows" At Memorial Medical Center

Patriotic scarecrows greet visitors of Memorial Medical Center as part of the annual Scarecrows on Parade contest hosted by the Ludington Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Ludington Daily News.

For many years, Memorial Medical Center employees have displayed their creativity by preparing the popular displays, which the hospital refers to as “Carecrows,” rather than “Scarecrows.” This year’s display, which lines Ludington Avenue in front of the medical center, takes on the patriotic theme of “United We Stand.”

Volunteers Honored At Annual Dinner

Volunteers and staff members gathered at Lincoln Hills October 20 for the annual recognition dinner to honor the service of Memorial Medical Center volunteers.

A total of 38 volunteers received honors for surpassing milestones of 100 hours or more during the past year.

MMC Announces Facility Renovation

Memorial Medical Center plans to launch a major facility upgrade in 2012 that will expand the hospital’s busy emergency and surgery facilities, and create a new main patient entrance facing Ludington Avenue. The project, approved by the MMC board of directors, will take more than a year to complete with an estimated investment of $14 million.

Holiday Brunch Raises $8,000

120 guests recently attended the Memorial Medical Center Foundation’s Holiday Brunch at the Cartier Mansion in Ludington. Guests were served a variety of gourmet delicacies, but the highlight of the event was the silent auction and raffle of the beautifully decorated holiday trees and wreaths.

The event raised over $8,000, which will be used to help further enhance the private patient room and renovation initiative at Memorial Medical Center.

Toys for Tots donations welcome through Dec. 16

Looking for a way to make a child’s Christmas a little happier? Memorial Medical Center’s Toys for Tots campaign continues through Friday, Dec. 16 at 3:00 pm. Donations of new, unopened toys (or cash to buy toys) from community members are welcome. Donations can be dropped off at the hospital. Toy boxes are located in the north lobby, as well as the business and human resources offices on the lower level just below the north lobby.

Remember a Loved One with Wings of Hope

The Wings of Hope tree in the south lobby of Memorial Medical Center is adorned with beautiful, personalized “angel wing” ornaments with the names of people fondly remembered or honored. Doctors donate to local charities

Each year the doctors at Memorial Medical Center make a pooled donation to worthy local causes. This year the medical staff chose Habitat for Humanity of Mason County and the St. Simon’s Church Food Pantry to receive the donation. The physicians’ donations totaled more than $11,400 this year, which was split between the two programs. Since the hospital’s active medical staff began the program in 2007, a total of $66,925 has been donated to local charities.

Another successful Toys for Tots drive

Congratulations to the Marine Corps Reserve and Salvation Army for the annual Toys for Tots campaign that put presents under the trees of many area youngsters to brighten their holidays. Memorial Medical Center again served as one of the collection points, organized by the MMC business office. MMC employees and guests donated 154 toys and $873 to purchase additional toys.

Cancer & Hematology center now open

Memorial Medical Center in Ludington has opened a new cancer and hematology center. It will provide continuity of local chemotherapy and other treatments for patients whose facility has discontinued operations, as well as serving new patients. Memorial Medical Cancer & Hematology is on the ground floor of the medical office building attached to the south side of the hospital.

Meet Eila—MMC’s Baby New Year 2012

Ludington’s first baby of 2012 is Eila Hanna. She was born at Memorial Medical Center 37 minutes into the New Year, at 12:37 am, January 1. She weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 21 inches. Her parents are Melissa and Paul Hanna of Ludington.

Community Health Assessment Survey Underway

Memorial Medical Center is sponsoring a comprehensive community health assessment and is encouraging Mason County and northern Oceana County residents who are contacted to complete the twenty-minute phone survey. The Carl Frost Center for Social Research at Hope College is conducting the assessment on behalf of the Ludington hospital. Survey calls began Monday, January 16 and are being made randomly to residents of Mason and northern Oceana Counties in order to determine residents’ health-related behaviors. Cell phones and landlines will be contacted as part of the survey.

MMC Employees Donate to C.O.V.E.

Klinger Joins Chamber Board

Dave Klinger, Memorial Medical Center’s vice president for organizational development and communications, is a new member of the board at the Ludington and Scottville Area Chamber of Commerce. Klinger was elected by fellow Chamber board members to a three-year term through the end of 2014. He is one of two new members to join the 14-member board this year. Dave joined the hospital executive team and moved to Ludington in August of 2011.

Win With Wellness Hosting Educational Event

Renita Diehlman, RN, FNP-BC, CDE, will be the keynote speaker during a free health education event hosted by Win with Wellness on Thursday, March 15 at 6pm in the Ludington High School cafeteria. She will give a presentation called, “The Importance of Exercise in Managing Diabetes and Other Medical Conditions.”

Diehlman is board certified by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators and has nine years of diabetes experience in several settings, including a certified diabetes education program, primary care clinic, and inpatient hospital. She recently joined Pentwater Family Practice.

Patient Safety Awareness Week

Memorial Medical Center is observing Patient Safety Awareness Week this week. Our hospital is a member of the National Patient Safety Foundation and places great emphasis on patient safety. This week, and throughout the year, we want to invite our patients and their families to join us to “Be Aware for Safe Care.”

We encourage our patients and their families to ask questions regarding their plan of care, diagnosis, medications and follow through. We advocate for them to be active participants in the care team.

Exercise Important In Managing Illness

About 100 people recently attended an educational session as part of the community wide Win with Wellness program. Nurse Practitioner Renita Diehlman of Pentwater Family Practice spoke to the group on the importance of exercise in our daily lives. She says routine exercise can reduce the risk of many chronic illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia, macular degeneration, irritable bowel syndrome and some forms of cancer while also helping to control weight.

At Your Request Room Service

Patients at Memorial Medical Center in Ludington now choose their meals from a room service menu.

Instead of choosing from a few items at each meal, the “At Your Request” room service concept provides patients with a menu of dozens of breakfast, lunch and dinner items as extensive as many restaurants. Any item can be ordered at any time between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

National Volunteer Week April 15-21

Annual MMC vs. LHS Quiz Bowl
