Assess Your Weight

One way to determine if
you are overweight or obese is to figure out your body mass index (BMI). The calculator provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at can automatically work out your BMI when you enter your height and weight.

If you know your BMI, you can determine if your weight is normal and healthy by checking the following ranges:

  • If your BMI is less than 18.5, you are underweight.
  • If your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9,
    your weight is healthy.
  • If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9,
    you are overweight.
  • If your BMI is 30.0 or higher,
    you are considered obese.

Another way to assess your weight is to measure your waist. Men whose waists are more than 40 inches and women whose waists are more than 35 inches are generally considered overweight.
