Multitasking Is Not
Good for Learning

When your child is studying, make sure homework is the only focus. New research shows that when we are distracted, we use a different brain system to learn than we normally would. We also have a tougher time recalling what we’ve learned in new situations or environments. TV is an obvious “no-no.” And MP3 players can only impede learning. That’s probably not a violin concerto coming through those earbuds.

Besides avoiding distraction, improve retention of new things by:

  • Connecting new information to something your child already knows
  • Using notes and lists as memory aids
  • Repeating a name or other new information when first learned
