Q&A: Is It Safe to Exercise During Pregnancy?

A growing body of research supports the idea that not only is it safe for healthy pregnant women to exercise, it’s a good idea. That’s true even for women who weren’t active before becoming pregnant. Physical activity may reduce the risk for complications, ease the aches and pains of pregnancy, and positively affect birth weight.

If you’re pregnant and want to begin or continue an exercise program, check with your doctor first. Certain problems, such as high blood pressure, may preclude you from exercise. If your doctor says it’s OK, engage in 30 minutes of low-impact exercise, such as walking or swimming, on most days of the week. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before, during, and after your workout.
