Hybrid Diabetes: An Emerging Trend

Doctors are seeing an increase in “hybrid diabetes”—a mixture of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body lacks insulin. In type 2 diabetes, often linked to being overweight, the body can’t use insulin properly.

When people show signs of hybrid diabetes, treatment can be difficult. They need insulin as well as additional medication to help them use the insulin. Weight gain and lack of exercise may be to blame for the rise of hybrid diabetes in people with type 1 diabetes.
