Tap the Health Benefits of Dancing

From ballet to hip hop, dancing puts a new spin on fitness. When you step onto the dance floor, you may be improving your body and mind. A moderate exercise with a social “twist,” dancing:

  • lets you socialize and meet new people
  • burns calories and works your heart and lungs
  • improves balance
  • may lower the risk for dementia.

Here are a few steps to add dance to your life:

  • Don’t worry if you haven’t danced in awhile.
  • Get your groove back by taking a beginner’s class.
  • Find a dance club that meets at your local gym or rec center.
  • Check out a cultural center that offers folk dancing, and explore a new culture or reconnect with your roots.
  • If you’re shy, put on some music at home and move to the beat in your living room.
