Shoe Inserts:
Can They Ease Your Pain?
Orthotics, or shoe inserts, may not stop back pain,
a recent medical review found. But they could help
your feet and legs feel better.
Soft orthotics include bunion shield pads, arch pads for flat feet, and heel inserts. These over-the-counter inserts can help cushion sore spots, such as on arthritic or diabetic feet.
A foot doctor can make a hard or semihard insert out of plastic or fiber, using a plaster cast of your foot. These custom-made inserts can reduce strains, aches, and pains in the legs. Such aches sometimes stem from foot problems or different leg lengths. The American Academy of Family Physicians says orthotics may help keep some athletes from suffering repeated pain and injury. They also can help shift an abnormal walking pattern, such as turning in of the feet.
