Could Your Child Be Using Crystal Meth?

“Crystal meth” is an illegal form of the stimulant methamphetamine. It also is called “meth,” “crank,” “glass,” or “ice.” It is usually smoked, although it can be snorted or injected.

Like other stimulants, meth gives people a burst of energy that can last for hours, followed by a severe “crash.” It also is highly addictive and damaging to the brain, lungs, heart, liver, and kidneys. People who use meth may show signs such as:

  • sleeplessness
  • nervousness
  • not eating
  • anger
  • tremors.

About 6% of high school students have used meth. If you suspect your child could be using meth, pick a time to talk when he is sober and you are calm. Make it clear that this is a serious issue. To help your child through it, get outside help from a counselor or clinic.
