House Plants: The Good, the Bad,
and the Flowery

Houseplants can add color, character, and life to your home. But, the wrong plants—or improper care—can make plants unhealthy additions to your habitat.

Keep these tips in mind when exercising your green thumb:

  • Don’t overwater plants. Overly damp soil can promote the growth of mold, which may trigger allergies. Pay particular attention to pots near bedroom windows—they are magnets for moisture and mold.
  • Consider growing flora in an enclosed terrarium if allergies are an issue.
  • Take plants outside when applying pesticides.
  • Stay away from eucalyptus and common English Ivy, which can be poisonous to pets and people. Amaryllis, cyclamen, spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), and philodendron also are toxic.
  • Place plants out of the reach of young children and pets.
